Startide
PRIVACY POLICY
Last updated 24 October 2026
ABOUT THIS POLICY
Startide collects only what it needs to run, never shows ads, never tracks you and never sells your data. This policy explains what the Startide app ("Startide", "we") collects, why, and how to delete it.
Startide is made by Larry Osamudawem Idahosa (Starry Labs), who is responsible for your data. Questions go to startide@starrylabs.app.
You need a free account to play Startide. Your game progress is saved to it, so it follows you to a new phone.
YOUR GAME PROGRESS
Your game progress is saved to your account on our servers, and a copy is kept on your phone so you can play offline. It includes:
- XP, ranks and the quests you accept, complete or create
- Your quest history and settings, such as theme and reminder times
- Quest reminders, which are scheduled by your phone itself (we don't use push notification servers)
One device plays an account at a time: signing in on a new device signs the old one out, after saving any progress it made offline. Your sign-in session is stored on your phone, encrypted with a key held in the iOS Keychain.
WHAT WE COLLECT WHEN YOU GO ONLINE
When you create an account, our servers store the following:
| Data | What it is | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Email address, an account ID, and your password in hashed form (we can't read it) | You, when you sign up with email |
| Apple sign-in | An Apple account ID and an email address, which may be an Apple private relay address | Apple, if you choose Sign in with Apple |
| Google sign-in | A Google account ID, email address, name and profile picture link | Google, if you choose Sign in with Google |
| Game progress | XP, ranks, quest history, your own quests, earned themes and settings, plus a random ID for the device that last signed in | Your device, as you play |
| Username | The name other players see, plus the times you changed it | You |
| Friends | Friend requests you send and receive, and who your friends are | You |
| Challenges | Quests you send to or receive from friends: title, description, attribute, difficulty, and whether they were accepted, completed or failed | You and your friends |
| Blocks | Players you have blocked | You |
| Reports | Reports you file about a challenge: the reason, an optional note and a copy of the challenge | You |
| Suggestions | Feedback you send from Settings | You |
| Messages | Notes we send to your Startide inbox, such as a welcome or a reply to your suggestion, and whether you dismissed them | Us |
| Technical logs | IP address, device and request details, kept by our hosting provider for security and troubleshooting | Your device, automatically |
We don't collect your location, contacts, photos, health data or any advertising identifier.
HOW WE USE IT
We use your data only to run Startide's online features and keep them safe:
- Sign you in, save your game progress, and send account emails such as confirmation and password-reset codes
- Let players find you by username, and run friends and challenges
- Enforce limits and filters that prevent spam and abusive names or messages
- Review reports and act on players who break the rules
- Read your suggestions to improve the app, and reply to them in your Startide inbox
We don't use your data for advertising, don't track you across other apps or websites, don't build profiles for marketing, and never sell or rent it.
Where privacy law asks for a legal basis (for example in the UK and EU): we process account and social data to provide the service you asked for (contract), and reports, limits and logs to keep players safe (legitimate interests).
WHO CAN SEE YOUR INFORMATION
Other players see only your username, and only in these places:
- In search results, when they type at least the first 3 letters of it (players you have blocked never find you)
- In friend requests and friend lists you are part of
- On challenges you send them or receive from them
Other players never see your email address, sign-in method, progress, blocks or reports. A player you block isn't told.
Service providers process data for us under their own privacy and security terms, only to run Startide:
| Provider | What they do |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosts the database and sign-in, in London, UK |
| Resend | Delivers account emails such as confirmation and reset codes |
| Apple and Google | Handle sign-in if you choose them |
We may also share data if the law requires it, or to protect players from serious harm.
HOW LONG WE KEEP IT, AND DELETING YOUR ACCOUNT
We keep your account data until you delete your account. You can do that at any time in the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. It takes effect immediately and can't be undone.
Deleting your account permanently removes:
- Your sign-in, email address and username
- Your friends and friend requests
- Every challenge you sent or received
- Your game progress, blocks, suggestions, messages and username history
One exception keeps other players safe. Reports stay for moderation, with your name removed: reports you filed no longer say who filed them, and reports about you no longer link to your account. They keep the reason, note and a copy of the challenge text.
Technical logs are kept for a limited time set by our hosting provider, then deleted. Deleting your account also deletes its game progress, both on our servers and on your phone.
SECURITY
Data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). The database lets each player read only their own data and that of players they're connected to, and every change goes through checks on our server. No system is perfectly secure, but we'll tell affected players promptly about any breach that puts their data at risk.
CHILDREN
Startide is for people aged 16 and over, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you think someone under 16 has an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
YOUR RIGHTS
You can ask us to access, correct, export or delete your data, or object to how we use it. You can change your username and delete your account yourself in the app; for anything else, email startide@starrylabs.app and we'll reply within 30 days. If you're in the UK or EU, you can also complain to your data protection authority.
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use your data, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
